About 214ID

214 Innovation & Development

214 Innovation & Development makes decades of C-level operating experience directly available to the CEOs, Deans, boards, and founders facing the decisions that most define their organizations.

214 Innovation & Development is a senior advisory firm for privately held technology and engineering companies, research universities, Federal contractors, and early-stage ventures. The firm advises on the decisions that most define an organization: board and governance architecture, AI fluency and governance, research partnerships, Federal pursuit strategy, leadership transitions, and investor readiness.

The firm is deliberately small. Every engagement is led directly by the senior advisor the client hired; there is no junior team, no staffed pyramid, and no leverage model. Work is taken on selectively, and much of it is never publicized.

214ID's counsel is grounded in operating experience from inside the institutions it serves: building the strategic partnership function of a Tier-1 engineering college and doubling its externally funded research, directing a national applied-technology consulting division, evaluating early-stage investments inside a venture firm, and holding C-level technology roles in national engineering organizations. That experience was earned as the operator accountable for outcomes, not as an outside reviewer.

The same is true of governance. The firm is led by its founder, Matthew Sanfilippo, a sitting director whose current board service spans insurance, industrial inspection, and financial services, with committee leadership across governance, audit and risk, innovation, and technology, and service through a successful ESOP conversion. 214ID advises boards from the same seat its clients occupy.

Across three decades, the firm's leadership has worked directly with organizations including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Apple, IBM, Intel, Ford, General Motors, Bombardier, Wabtec, Westinghouse, and Milwaukee Tool, and with Federal agencies including DARPA, ARPA-H, DOD, DOE, NASA, NIH, NIST, and NSF.

214ID is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
